The largest gift in the history of Claremont McKenna College for direct faculty support has literally met its match. The College today announces it is reaching the successful conclusion of the George R. Roberts Faculty Leadership Initiative, a fundraising measure launched in 2006 to raise a total of $60 million to build, support, and strengthen the College's academic environment with exceptional scholars committed to teaching and research. Named for Trustee George Roberts '66 P'93, the Roberts Challenge was inspired by a matching gift from Roberts and his family to encourage additional support for endowed faculty positions. Since the launch of the Roberts Challenge in fall 2006, the College has endowed 26 additional chairs, including nine new positions. Full Story

 
    Rev. Adam McHugh '98 Gives U.S. House of Representatives a Prayer
McHugh prays, "May the work that is done today in the halls of the powerful be done on behalf of the powerless." CMC's presence was at an all-time high in the House as Rep. David Dreier '75 (T) recognized Chaplain Fr. Patrick Conroy '72, McHugh '98, and Lindsay Wilson McHugh '99. Full Story

    The Fourth Annual Robert Day School Case Competition
Fourteen teams competed on Feb. 24 to win the $5,000 prize for this year's Robert Day School case competition. The winning team, composed of Andrew Bergman '14, Monica Cason '14, Orlan Davies '13, and Shree Pandya '14, evaluated a case entitled, "Hitting the Wall: Nike and International Labor Practices." Dan Savage Speaks Out
The author, sex columnist, and founder of the It Gets Better Project visited the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum on Feb 29. Although focused on It Gets Better, the evening's topics became increasingly taboo. Full Story







The Clean Plate Club
CMC has taken waste not, want not to heart, investing in a total of three food-waste decomposers at Collins and the Athenaeum kitchen. The disposals are another debit check in the College's burgeoning

Good Time(ing): Demetri Martin Makes 'em Laugh
Comedian Demetri Martin's a wisecracker, alright: The funny man attended Yale University and NYU School of Law. He also grew up on the Jersey Shore, likes to skateboard, and is allergic to nuts and watermelon. His visit last Thursday was co-sponsored by CMC and Pomona College. Full Story

Michael Larson '80 Joins Ecolab Board
Trustee Michael Larson '80, chief investment officer for Bill Gates Investments (BGI Group), has been elected to the board of directors of Ecolab Inc., a St. Paul, Minnesota-based water, hygiene, and energy technologies and services company. Full Story

CMC Lightens
"Green-lighting" has new meaning. CMC has flipped the switch on several hundred new light fixtures and lamps that are expected to save the College about $25,000 a year in energy costs. Full Story
