The Gould Center for Humanistic Studies attracted a panel of first-rate speakers from around the world, as well as dozens of attendees, for its Knowledge Through Imagination conference. The event examined ways that imagining can teach us more about such things as emotional and aesthetic knowledge, knowledge of other minds, and modal knowledge. "One of the wonderful aspects was the penetrating yet congenial discussion that took place in every single session," says Amy Kind, Professor of Philosophy and Department Chair at CMC and conference co-organizer with Peter Kung, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Pomona College. "People were really working together to achieve a deeper understanding of the issues before us, and you could feel throughout the conference that real progress was being made." Full Story

    2012 CMC-UCLA Coachella Valley Economic Forecast
CMC Trustee Robert J. Lowe '62 and professors Marc Weidenmier, Andrew Busch, Manfred Keil, and Jack Pitney are among the experts presenting at the Coachella Valley Economic Forecast Conference on Tuesday, May 15, at the Miramonte Resort & Spa in Indian Wells. Presented by Rabobank and hosted by CMC with the UCLA Anderson Forecast, this is the first time the event has been held in the Coachella Valley. Full Story
     
             
 
  The American Institute of Indian Studies Welcomes CMC
CMC recently became an institutional member of the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS), which is headquartered at the University of Chicago and has several academic centers across India. Established in 1961, AIIS is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about India, and the promotion of intellectual engagement with India, in American institutions of higher education.   Olivia Uranda   CMC's Ninth CMCer Awarded Fulbright Scholarship
Olivia Uranga '12, a dual Middle Eastern studies and government major from Temple City, has been added to CMC's growing list of Fulbright Students. She received her grant to teach English in the Kingdom of Bahrain. She joins an impressive list of students already selected for this honor. Full Story

Reflecting on a Shifted Perception
Greg Zahner '12, former resident assistant, reflects upon his experience organizing Shifting Perceptions: Celebrating the Spectrum of Leadership, an Athenaeum series hosted by the 2011-2012 RAs. The series was a wonderful success, bringing in notable figures such as BD Wong, Fran Lebowitz, Rick Welts Jr., and Dan Savage. Full Story

Targeted Negotiation at 5-C Workshop
In conjunction with CMC's Alumni Weekend, the Women and Leadership Alliance sponsored a 5-C Negotiation Workshop on Friday, April 27. This event drew students from across The Claremont Colleges and was a successful contribution to Alumni Weekend's roster of activities. Full Story




Gaston Espinosa

American Religious History Summer Session
This seminar, taught by Gastón Espinosa, the Arthur V. Stoughton Associate Professor of Religious Studies, analyzes American religious history––from colonialism to the present––through readings, speakers, films, and field trips. The course covers the brief history and beliefs of Native American, Catholic, Mainline Protestant, Evangelical, Pentecostal, Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Occult traditions in the United States, and analyzes how they have brought about social change in religion, politics, gender, and race relations.

James Q. Wilson
The Salvatori Center is dedicating its upcoming Regulations and the Administrative State conference to the memory of its former board chair, social and political scientist James Q. Wilson. "Everyone who is devoted to understanding and improving social and political life will miss Jim Wilson's clear thinking, humane understanding, and intellectual courage," says Salvatori Center director Mark Blitz, Professor of Government & Fletcher Jones Professor of Political Philosophy.

Gary Gilbert

Studying the life of Jesus in Summer Session
Gary Gilbert, associate professor of religious studies, brings his "holistic approach to learning" to this class, where students largely come with an interest in knowing more about Jesus. The focus will be on reading and analyzing texts, and learning to make reasoned judgments about history and historical personalities. Full Story

Erani-Lane Capture Ojai Doubles Title
Captain Robbie Erani '12 and Alex Lane '13 won the Ojai Division III Doubles Championship, defeating top-seeded Nicholas Ballou and Ray Worley of Cal Lutheran. CMS has now won Ojai titles for four consecutive years, with Lawrence Wang winning the singles title in 2009, MacColl and Wei capturing the doubles title in 2010, Lane winning the singles in 2011, and now Erani and Lane adding a doubles title in 2012. CMS Softball Wins SCIAC Tournament and Earns Bid to NCAA Championships

CMS softball completed a clean sweep of every opponent at the SCIAC Softball tournament over the weekend, defeating Pomona-Pitzer 9-2 and Whittier College 5-2. They then faced University of Redlands in the championship game and won that as well by a score of 2-0.

Work by CMCers to Be Part of Exhibit at The Huntington

As the culmination of a semester course on English cultural history of the 16th and 17th centuries, CMC students have been studying the physical characteristics of portrait drawings and will share their thoughts and research as part of a temporary exhibition in The Huntington's Works on Paper gallery, July 28-Oct. 29.
